I am someone who loves to know how things work. It is often hard for me to just throw caution to the wind and blindly trust something. So, when I got interested in Garcinia Cambogia I, of course, had to figure out exactly what makes it tick, and what I could expect from using it, both benefits and side effects.
The benefits of Garcinia Cambogia come from it’s active ingredient HCA (short for hydroxycitric acid). The first (and in my mind biggest) benefit of the supplement is that it acts as an appetite suppressant. If you don’t overeat, you don’t gain weight, simple as that. The way HCA does this is by increasing the level of a brain chemical called serotonin. High serotonin levels cause us not to feel hungry.
On the opposite end, low serotonin levels have been associated with feeling down or depressed. In response to these feelings, we often turn to food. So, by increasing serotonin levels, Garcinia extract also effectively eliminates emotional eating.
Something else HCA does is prevent the body from creating fat from carbohydrates, by blocking an enzyme called citrate lyase. That enzyme is what the body uses to produce fat and carbs, sugar especially, are the largest contributors to weight gain.
The supplement also comes jam packed with several less talked about benefits which I already briefly mentioned as part of my Garcinia Cambogia review. It can increase exercise endurance and performance by making our bodies use glucose more efficiently. Glucose is the sugar that cells burn for energy. HCA may also lower the level of insulin in the body, potentially helping those suffering from diabetes. It can even improve your Cholesterol by reducing the so-called bad cholesterol (triglycerides and LDL). It slices, it dices, it seems to do everything. However, I would caution that if you are already taking any medication to manage your blood sugar level or cholesterol, to please talk to your doctor first. Make sure combining Garcinia extract with your meds will not cause any undesirable effects.
When you start taking Garcinia, if you are not noticing any results, remember that it takes a few days before you start seeing the effects of HCA. And it may take a full two weeks for them to fully kick in. Sadly, as much as I would like it to be true, nothing happens overnight, and there is no magical diet or supplement that can make you lose significant weight in 48 hours. The human body is a very complex system, and it takes time for it to adopt and incorporate new things introduced to it. Consistency is also key. Buy a quality Garcinia Cambogia product, stay the course, don’t lose faith, and the results will come.
There are few documented side effects of Garcinia Cambogia that I am aware of, especially when it is taken correctly. That being said, since everyone’s body, environment and circumstances are different, it would be unrealistic to say that no one will ever suffer any adverse effects. I believe it is always a good idea to at least have a general feel for what side effects may occur, regardless of how small the chances. This way we can watch out for and understand them.
Before we get any further, there are certain conditions under which you should avoid taking Garcinia extract. Do not take it if you are pregnant or nursing. There is not enough research available on the supplement’s effect on your little one. If you are suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia, HCA should also be avoided. Finally, as previously mentioned, if you are taking medication for diabetes or to control your cholesterol, please consult a doctor first.
The most commonly reported side effects of Garcinia Cambogia include any of mild dizziness, headaches, dry mouth, nausea, diarrhea or an upset stomach. If you find yourself suffering from any of these, you should first ensure that the supplement is indeed the cause. These issues are common enough that it may very well not be. For example, I sometimes get a headache from changes in weather. It could easily be mistaken for one caused by HCA. So, if you do experience one of the possible side effects, don’t immediately throw in the towel. But, by all means, do try to figure out what is causing it. It never hurts to have a talk with your doctor to see whatever the symptom you are experiencing is caused by Garcinia Cambogia or are not related.
No matter how low the risk of side effects, there are a few simple things you can do to help minimize them. First and foremost, make sure you take Garcinia Cambogia correctly. Next, stay well hydrated (though this should be true at any time, not just when dieting). Make sure you consume at least six to eight glasses of water (or about 2 litres) per day. Taking most dietary supplements, Garcinia including, results in increased water loss. Drinking lots of water will help keep your body’s hydration in balance. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, make sure the supplement you take is a good, quality product. Do your research before you purchase. Alternatively, if you prefer, you can try the brand I use these days. It works great for me.
Remember that ultimately, dietary supplements are very safe, and the benefits far outweigh the small chance of side effects. If you follow the guidelines on how the supplement should be taken, you should have nothing to worry about except for having to get some new clothes after the weight comes off. Not a bad problem to have.
